Convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby was released on parole on Monday after serving almost ten years in an Indonesian jail.
From the time of her arrest, Corby and her family have been the centre of a media circus – captivating both viewers and broadcasters alike.
Corby is expected to receive a massive pay out for her first television interview but this isn’t the first time broadcasters have been willing to pay the big bucks for exclusivity.
In 1995, Lindy Chamberlain was paid $250,000 for her “Dingo took my baby” story after an investigation into the murder of her daughter
In 1997, landslide survivor Stuart Diver was paid $250,000.
In 2006, Beaconsfield mine collapse survivors Brant Webb and Todd Russel were paid $2.6 million.
Schapelle Corby’s family is said to have been paid around $3 million for exclusive interviews and features. Corby could be given the same amount for her first television interview following her release.
Though there are crime laws preventing criminals from making money speaking about the crimes committed, Corby has found ways of getting paid. For example, Corby is believed to have been paid $280,000 for her book, My Story. She avoided Australian crime laws by using her brother-in-law’s Indonesian bank account for the book’s proceeds.
The Corby family has also cashed out on various disputes with the media. They received a payout for the book Sins of Our Father’s unauthorised use of family photos and Schapelle’s sister Mercedes received a payout from Channel 7 after they aired defamatory claims about her.
Despite the defamation dispute with Mercedes Corby, Channel 7 is rumoured to have secured the first post-jail interview with Schapelle Corby.
